Ingrid Michaelson!

Last Friday night, Wes and I headed to New Orleans to see Ingrid Michaelson at the House of Blues. She just happens to be one of my favorite singer / songwriters. I’m not typically a concert goer, in fact I could probably count the number of concerts I’ve attended on one hand. So, little did we know, the House of Blues is standing room only, so we were in for a long night. I say, totally worth it. Ingrid rocked the house with her singing and humor. You gotta love a singer that will parody one of her own songs. She even did a little Vanilla Ice and Fresh Prince theme song for us. She just released her latest album, “Everybody“, which is great. “Girls and Boys“, is still my favorite album though. If you haven’t heard of her, check her out on iTunes.

Here a few pics and a video we shot at the concert.

Oh, and this is a shot that Greg Holden shot onstage. He opened for Ingrid and was pretty good himself. See if you can spot Wes and I in the crowd.

Kayla playing in the fountains…

Destin 2009

September 16th, 2009

Well, it was a quick trip We left around noon on Sunday and headed east for Destin. We drove through 5 hours of rain to get there. It was not looking promising.

We got there around 6:00 Sunday afternoon and got to play on the beach a little bit. Kayla loved the sand and was still telling me today, “sand fun”. She was not so happy with the Gulf. She was a little scared of the waves. I guess she is like me and prefers the pool.  With all the wind and rain it was a little chilly out there. A little too chilly for the pool. Kayla’s teeth were chattering and her lips were purple, I said, ” Kayla, are you cold?” She said, “No, pool fun!” So we let her swim in the hot tub, which she just loved.

There is a shopping center in Destin that is very similar to our new Perkins Rowe, there is a Bass Pro and Rave Theater and numerous other shops and restaurants. In the center is a bunch of fountains in sidewalk that the kids can play in and a play place with slides and stuff. We let Kayla run around for about an hour. She loved those fountains.

Then yesterday when it was time to leave, it was a beautiful day. I wanted to take her back to the beach, but we had to check out at 11:00am, so we didn’t have time. Rain aside, it was a great trip, we got to relax. The hotel offered free dvd rentals, so we watched Madagascar 2, Fools Gold and Marley & Me in the king size bed. And yesterday morning I sat outside on the balcony and read a book and listened to the waves. I could have done that for hours.

She did surprisingly well for such a long road trip. And she slept very well in the room, so I am ready to take her on another trip. We have a trip to Houston planned in November. I just hope she is as impressed with it as she was with the beach.

So, I was digging around in my photos this week and came across this ancient photo of me.

david-1-2.jpeg

I think this was taken around 1989? That would have made me 6 at the time. I do remember this was taken at a family reunion in Grand Isle. We had a crawfish boil and I found this little crab. I guess I decided to keep it as a pet, I don’t remember. I was probably traumatized when I realized it was dead, lol.

There was really no point to me sharing this photo with you or the story that follows. But it’s been a while since my last post, so bear with me and I’ll share some of what I can remember from being 6.

Did you turn on the music widget? Well that was my favorite song when I was a kid. Seriously, I thought it was the greatest song ever. I don’t even remember other songs at that age, just this one. Best line of the song…”Knee deep in Hoopla. “

Even as a child, I was not a morning person. Not much motivated me to get out of bed. But Pee Wee’s play house was the reason I woke up on Saturday morning.

I’ve always been a good mix of tom boy and girly girl. Pipeworks, Legos and Barbies were my favorite toys.

Did anyone else have a set of these? Seriously, they were the greatest toy ever.

I was also in love with the blue Thunderbird

There’s no telling where I saw one of these cars, I just remember that I was going to buy one when I grew up. Well, I kept it in the Ford family anyway.

And lastly, I was totally in love with this guy.

macguyver.jpg

Yes, I just knew that I was going to marry Macgyver.  Don’t laugh, you know that being able to build a bomb out of a rubber band, a paper clip and a tube sock was hot. Macgyver is still the man, lol.

Ok, one more just for fun. I don’t know what birthday this was, but can you guess where we celebrated?

So there you have it, 6 year old G. I know you were all dying to know.

Yam City Tri

August 31st, 2009

Yesterday Wes, Holly and I woke up insanely early and headed out to the middle of nowhere, other wise known as Opelousas, LA, or Yam city. Left around 4:30am and got there about 6:00am, but not before Wes got a speeding ticket, 58 in a 45. Gotta love Port Allen. Personally I think it’s a bogus ticket and the cop was just in a bad mood from having to work the night shift, but let’s not go there. It was still dark when we got there. I was amazed by this, because I never get up that early and didn’t know when the sun rose. But it eventually came up and this was what it looked like.

3875273710_a91b1936e01.jpg

The start was delayed about 30 minutes due to fog. So we got to hang around and chat with some of the other racers. You meet some really cool people at these events. It’s a very diverse crowd. I don’t know what the minimum age limit was but there were a lot of kids in this race, looked to be as young as 10 and adults well into there 70’s. They came from all around the state to compete in the annual Yam City Tri.

3874487279_f2266f5f80.jpg

So anyway, Holly ran the race all by herself, while Wes and I decided to take it easier and compete as a relay team. I did the first 2 legs of the race, 150 yard swim and 14 mile bike, Wes took the 2 mile run.

3874525855_f907eb260f.jpg

The bike was quite a haul, long rolling hills, road kill and one really bumpy service road.

Holly was still smiling at the finish line.

3875333458_13c1ee4f38.jpg

Holly and her medal. She took 2nd place in her division.                                                                                            Her swim time 4:23, bike time 43:26, run time 14:05, total time 1:07:20. Go Holly!

Team “That’s What She Said”, (yep, that was the name of our team, lol),  swim 4:20, bike 57:53, run 17:53.

We had a great time, I am disappointed that the  tri season is pretty much over for this year, it’ll be starting up again next spring. I plan on training this winter so I can get back into it, and there are plenty of 5K’s coming up to keep me on my toes.

So after that, we got to go visit with some great friends that just moved to Lafayette. They were nice enough to let us use their shower. That would have been a funky ride home otherwise. Got to hang out for a little while and have some lunch before heading back.  It was an exhausting day. Wes and I had to run out to P-ville to pick up Kayla but crashed when we got home.

Here’s your sign…

August 27th, 2009

Ok, this is not a rant, just one of those here’s your sign moments. I’m not picking on waitresses either, they do a hard job for little pay. That being said, our waitress at Chili’s today just did not have it together. And she was training another waitress, which makes the story all the better.

So we went to Chilis this afternoon, well after the lunch crowd. We decided to go with this appetizer,  2 entres and dessert for $20 deal. So waitress came to take our drin order and we went ahead and ordered everything. So we get our appetizer and wait and wait, no entres. She instead brings the check to us, like I guess she wanted us to pay right then. Which I thought was really weird. I’m not normally one to still someone on a tip, but tips are also based on service and quality also. So anyway, she comes back to tell us 3 times that our food is coming out soon that she delayed putting in our order so we could finish our appetizer. So by the time we get our food, Wes is full and ready for a to go box. I ordered a salad, which does not keep well. We also asked them to pack our molten chocolate cake to go too. So I’m eating my salad when they bring out our to go boxes and dessert with ice cream. So, we had to wait for our entres, but they bring our ice cream now, so it can melt while we are eating. Seriously? So we went ahead and left with our dedert in hand.  Couldn’t blame it on being overwhelmed because we were her only table. So anyway, that’s it. haven’t posted in a while, so there you go.

As for the bonus theme song, I couldn’t find the Chili’s baby back ribs song, so this was the next best thing.

Proof…

0018.jpg

Ok, here it is…PROOF that I completed the Triathlon. So yeah, Wes forgot the camera and didn’t get any shots of me torturing myself. There were photographers out take pics of all the racers. I know it’s wrong to steal, but to buy a 4×5 of this print was $14.95. Which that seems like stealing too, sheesh. So I’ll just keep this digital reminder as proof. :)

Kids

August 10th, 2009

Today, I went in to check on Kayla, while she was taking a nap, and this is what I found…

3809277559_f0eeef4502.jpg

She’s a fan of small spaces lately. She’s been playing with a plastic storage bin the last couple days. She’ll put all her pillows and blankets in it and watch tv. She wanted to take a nap in it today, but I took it away and told her she could have it back after her nap. Well I guess this was the next best option.

I went in a few minutes later only to find her still asleep, but repositioned on the other side of the drawer.
