Day 2

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

While last night, we may have thought the red wine to be the clear winner because it attracted more flies. The overall aroma seemed to be enough for these little pests as they just hung out on the rim of the glass. I see no victims here.

Next up we have the mason jar with fruit. This one is difficult to judge. Flies were not immediately drawn to it, actually this morning there was only 1 fly inside.  However, a few hours later more flies came, I approximate 6-8. The problems with this, is that the theory that flies are stupid and can get in but not out, was proven incorrect. While shaking the jar vigorously this afternoon, I counted 3 flies. Which means, the others escaped or these are flies are insectivores and ate their fellow jar mates.

Finally, we have our leader, vinegar and dawn. While the flies were not immediately drawn to this deadly cocktail, it won out in the end. Disproving the theory that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. What was it about this liquid concoction? Smell…appearance…availability…maybe it was curiosity. We may never know.

So, all joking aside, this killed some of these little pests, but not all. So, there may be more experiments on the way.

Kids, don’t try this at home…

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I have some uninvited guests at my house this week that I’m not too happy about. Fruit flies! Have you had to deal with these? They don’t go away, they just seem to multiply. I picked up all my fruit and put it away in the refrigerator. I’m not too happy about that either because I don’t really like cold fruit, at least not my bananas, apples and mandarins. I just threw the potatoes away because I never heard of putting a potato in the refrigerator. This still did not work, so I went to my main source of all vital information, Google! Found this site that had all sorts of ideas that “work”. So rather than trial and error, I’m conducting a little side by side comparison.

Exhibit: A

(Mason jar with fruit scraps inside. Covered the top with saran wrap and poked holes in wrap with toothpick.)

Hypothesis: Flies can get in through the small holes, but can’t get out.

Exhibit: B

(Vinegar and Dawn dish washing liquid)

Hypothesis: Flies are attracted to the smell, land and are then drown from the dawn

Exhibit: C

(Red wine)

Hypothesis: Flies are attracted to the wine, land, get drunk and die.

We’re about 15 minutes into the experiment and while red wine seems to have attracted 3 times as many flies than the others, vinegar and dawn are in the lead with one casualty.  Be sure to check back tomorrow for the results.

Fastest tomato in the world…

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Wes and I went out to State Capital Raceway the other night for test and tune. Just playing around with my car a little. It really wasn’t a great night, it was very humid. So I still didn’t get in the 12’s like I’d hoped. But this little tomato had the ride of it’s life.  He had a comfy little spot in the glove compartment. Fastest recorded time was 103mph. I have googled this and see no other tomatoes reaching high speeds. Therefor I declare this tomato the fastest tomato in the world!

What becomes of such a special tomato you ask? Well, tonight it was sliced up and pared with bacon and mayo to make a spectacular BLT ( minus the L). Fast tomatoes are delicious.

Just one of those days…

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Ever have one of those days where you just feel like you got hit by a bus. I’m having one of those.  Yesterday was different, yesterday there was clarity, focus, energy, productivity. Then that energy carried over into the night, where my body was tired, but my mind was racing. About nothing in particular. After tossing and turning, socks on /socks off, ceiling fan on/off, I even tried the iPod with a little Moonlight Sonata and Clair de Lune, nothing helped. At 3am, I was watching Old Tonight Shows on the DVR. Finally fell asleep about 6am this morning. Exhaustion was not my only affliction though, I am feeling the repercussions of my workout yesterday. I’m really regretting having done total body yesterday, because now, my whole body hurts.

Luckily Kayla was able to entertain herself for most of the day. With summer comes swimming and we dug Kayla’s pool out of the shed this weekend. So, she played in the pool and ran around the yard, while I lounged in the hammock. I did get to take a nap this afternoon. I don’t know if Kayla actually did take a nap, but I was out. I awoke about 2 hours later to find her running around the house eating croutons right out of the bag. I guess they are sorta like chips. Anyway, I am really looking forward to getting a full nights sleep tonight even if it requires some Tylenol PM.

My child is weird and I have proof…

Friday, May 8th, 2009

This was taken about 2 weeks ago, Wes, Kayla and I met Matt for lunch at Jason’s Deli. Kayla ate her raw broccoli and carrots with no problems, so I thought she deserved and ice cream. She wouldn’t have anything to do with it. Wes and I didn’t want her to miss out, so we tried force feeding it to her which did not go over well. So how did we get her to eat it?

Yep, that is ice cream, not ranch dressing. And you laughed when I said she was weird :)

iMovie…

Friday, May 8th, 2009

So yesterday Wes tells me he wants me to learn iMovie and make some videos for TPS. I couldn’t wait to get started, this is my first video attempt, all trial and error. Took me about 3 hours to make this, but hopefully, now that I’ve figured out how to use it, the next one won’t take near as long. I’m loving my Mac. Check it out, tell me what you think…

Spring Fiesta ‘09…

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Yeah, so my dreams for Wimbledon were smashed this weekend during the Spring Fiesta. Honestly, I didn’t expect to win the whole tournament, but I didn’t expect to get shut out either. Wes and I played our first match Friday night and got rolled up by some old folks. They seriously had to be in their sixty’s, ok so sixty isn’t ancient or anything, but it was a little embarrassing to be completely annihilated by people old enough to be our grandparents.  We still had another shot since it was a double elimination tournament, so we played again Saturday at 1pm. I think that was punishment for losing the night before, that we had to play in the middle of the day. It was stinkin hot.  Anyway, we had a little more strategy and a lot less pride going into this match, we still got smoked, but not quite as bad, and we pulled out one match win.  I’m not giving up on tennis, but I will need a LOT of practice before the next tournament.
